This is a Berkeley institution serving the finest of fresh ingredients in the California-Mediterranean based cuisine. I have always enjoyed the service here and find the noise level to be very acceptable. I find that eighty-five percent of the time my meals here are good to very good. On the other hand, the fifteen percent comes in to play and I find my meals to be just okay. I don't know how the kitchen goes from being good most of the time to on occasion just average. If this kitchen problem could be worked out, I would expect to see Lalime's make a move from its Honorable Mention status.

Ordering from the menu is similar to Chinese dining. Lalime’s offers many appetizers that can be shared and a somewhat smaller selection of "more substantial dishes". Some of my favorite appetizers are the Lalime’s blue heron lettuces with homemade vinaigrette and garlic croutons; grilled scallops and ruby red grapefruit with lemon beurre blanc; and a pizzetta with roast chiles, onions, cheddar and cilantro. Switching over to the more substantial dishes, I would probably opt for a lighter entrée such as grilled local wild salmon with spring vegetable sauté, cherry tomato confit and sorrel vinaigrette.

Bon Appetit!
